The Early History of Llandecwyn Church.

Eglwys Llandecwyn

Saint Tecwyn, together with Tanwg and Twrog came to this area in the sixth century, and realised that there was a huge boulder on the site where the Llandecwyn Church now stands where locals met to worship – an ancient altar of Druid origins.

This was at the time Christianity first came to this area. This boulder came to be known as Saint Tecwyn's rock and it is believed that it is here that Saint Tecwyn stood to preach.

This present church was built to replace the church from the middle ages in 1879. The roof was built to the pattern of old Welsh barns of this period, and there is a cross called Saint Tecwyn's cross on the left on the lower part of the wall - scratched roughly with a sharp object.

In the middle ages the old house, Ty'n Llan situated by the church used to be an inn, which used to be a resting place for travellers as this was the only road between Harlech and Maentwrog.

This is the only church in Wales consecrated to Saint Tecwyn, and due to it's location is seen from many locations and the view of the Dwyryd estuary, Portmeirion and the Llyn peninsula is well worth a visit.
