Capel y Graig (by the Rev Dewi Tudur Lewis)

In his book on Baptist history in the area, the Reverend Samuel Pierce refers to a cause by the Baptists at Bryn y Bwa Bach in 1763 and that services were held there at 2.00 pm on Sundays. This was probably the start of the cause in Talsarnau. The chapel was called Ebenezer but I do not know when it was built or established as a place of worship.

Here are some personal memories. Ceridwn Jones, or Dodo Bwthyn, as she was popularly known, was responsible for maintaining the cause when I came to the area in 1982. She was the secretary and organist. She was a very witty and original character.

Reverend Tecwyn Ifan came to preach on Sundays in October, before Thanksgiving Monday. (Usually on the 3rd Monday in October) Tecwyn stayed with Ceridwen Jones on the Sunday evening to save having to travel before holding the Thanksgiving Service on the following day. When publicly thanking the welcome on Monday afternoon, Tecwyn Ifan said he enjoyed the welcome and had a "few smokes with Dodo!!" That was the last time Tecwyn was invited to preach there!!

I preached frequently at Capel y Graig. Here are the names of some of the people who attended the services there. Mrs Kate Williams, Ty'n y Fron, Mrs Agnes Evans, Cefn Trefor Isaf, Mrs Nelta Roberts, Bronwylfa, Mrs Iona Aubrey, Garth Byr. The cause came to an end and the building was sold sometime in the 1990s.
